Overview
5G base stations integrate antennas and Remote Radio Units (RRUs) into Active Antenna Units (AAUs). Meanwhile, the Baseband Unit (BBU) is split into Distributed Units (DUs) and Centralized Units (CUs). The DU handles real-time physical layer processing, while the CU manages non-real-time protocol layer processing. The transmission between AAUs and DUs is referred to as 5G fronthaul, between DUs and CUs as midhaul, and between CUs and the core network as backhaul. Depending on network requirements at the base station location, one DU can connect to 3, 6, 9, or even more AAUs.
